It’s late 2011, and an exploding lava sun is melting into the turquoise sea surrounding the island of St. John, in the US Virgin Islands.
Alisa and I head inside from our balcony and onto the couch; ready to finish the evening with a movie.
Our sweet little Rocky boy, loving the Caribbean life in his two-year-old, ten-pound Yorkshire Terrier body, is nearby… as usual.
Rocky has his bowl of filtered water, Alisa is enjoying a glass of sweet moscato, and I’m sipping on an “R&R”, my favorite blend of dark Cruzan rum and root beer.
Out of nowhere, Alisa appears startled and asks me, “Uhhhh… did you drink my wine?”
I laugh. “No, why?”
“Because it’s gone! And I just had a full glass!”
We look at each other, and then—tentatively—at Rocky.
There he is, standing under our kitchen table, about ten feet away.
He’s looking straight at us, but something’s off.
“Rocky, are you okay?” I ask him.
He wobbles a little, regains his balance, but then tips over completely.
Alisa and I look at each other in shock.
“Oh, Rocky Boy, “ she says. “Come sit with us on the couch.”
He gets up, shakes himself off, and takes off for the couch.
Gracefully, he leaps! And face-plants into the side of the couch.
We pick up our little boozehound, shower him with love, and make sure he’s okay.
He’ll be fine.
But for now, he just needs to sleep this one off.
